Setting up a Home Office You'll Want to Work In

More and more people are finding themselves working from home, a great benefit to companies and professionals with flexible time and discipline. Having a designated schedule and work area are integral to keeping the work and home life balance. A good home office needs to be functional first and beautiful second. Below are a few tips to creating an effective and pleasant workspace.

Get creative with storage. If you need to see something to remember it exists, try wall storage: magazine type racks, or children’s library-style display shelves. If you prefer bookcases, get attractive ones that are big enough that you don’t need to overstuff. If you’re using the guest bedroom, create a shelving system for the closet so you minimize the need for storage in the main office area. If you need a printer but want to keep it hidden, that can go on a file cabinet in the closet.

Stay stylish and functional. Keep it warm and welcoming with furnishings that reflect your style. Splurge on a chair that makes you want to put in the hours. Don’t like sitting for long periods? Sit on a yoga ball for part of the day to minimize back and neck tension. Better yet, get a desk that lifts so you can stand for part of the day.

Personalize the space. You may already be at home, but keep the space happy by displaying not only pictures, but calming personal items that will inspire and uplift. This could be favorite artwork, small plants, or even a Zen sand garden or mini fountain.

Let the light in. Allow plenty of natural light into the room. If possible, have the office be in a southern facing room or position your desk in front of a window. Most overhead house lighting is inadequate for work. Try a few table lamps, which offer a nice soft glow and interesting design possibilities.

Do what’s best for you. This is your home. There are no real rules. Keep a jump rope nearby if that helps get the mind moving.

Testimonial

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had Linda as my real estate agent for the past 30 years! (Can't believe it's been that long.) During that time, she has helped me and my family with numerous transactions. Linda has always been completely professional, an excellent problem solver and most importantly, someone I could trust to make things turn out right. Real estate dealings can sometimes be stressful. Linda's ability to listen, her negotiation skills and her wonderfully positive attitude smoothed the way and even made the process enjoyable! She has always given more than what was expected - in service, in care and in attention to whatever was most important to us. In short, Linda is a gem! To say that I highly recommend her is a great understatement. Martha Bousfield Foothill resident, Entrepreneur & Mom
