It's Time for Winter Farmer’s Markets
 
Farmers markets are often associated with the summer and fall months, but did you know that some of your favorite local farmer's markets are open year-round? Why not plan a day and visit your local winter farmers market? You can learn about what produce is available seasonally and support local farmers and vendors!



Make a round-trip without buying anything first

Taking the time to do a once-through of the winter farmers market gives you the opportunity to scope out what is available and if there are vendors that offer the same product at a lower price. You can make a plan to gather items strategically so that you do not have to worry about dropping items or making multiple trips to your car.

Ask questions

Winter farmers markets tend to be less populated than summer or fall farmers markets, which allows the farmers to spend more time talking with their customers. You can ask them about the products they offer, how to use the products, any recipes they recommend, or how they grow or make it.

Find a new favorite

Usually, the winter crops will produce many root vegetables like potatoes, rutabaga, and onions. You can also find many unique looking squash, some citrus like limes and lemons, leafy greens like arugula, and other vegetables like asparagus, peas and brussels sprouts. Vendors will often offer “value-added” products during the winter months; this can include things like honey or organic lotions.
